This line started out as the Memphis Branch Railroad and Steamboat Company in 1839. A broad gauge line (5 feet between the rails), it ran 20 miles between Rome and Kingston and a connection with the Western and Atlantic Railroad (CSX today). The line was reorganized as the Rome Railroad in 1849, which was purchased by the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad in 1896; the NC&StL abandoned the route in 1943.
