The Rome and Northern Railroad

Rome Junction to Gore, GA

Chartered in 1909 and completed in 1910, the Rome and Northern Railroad connected the factories and furnaces in Rome, Georgia, with iron ore mines in Gore, to the north. The 19-mile line was originally chartered to continue north to Chattanooga, Tennesee, but that extension never materialized.

Once the mines around Gore had been depleted, the line fell into disuse and was abandoned in 1923. Today, US Route 27 is generally aligned along the R&N's former routing.
