The New Mexico Central Railway

Corona to Kennedy, NM

This abandoned railway line started in 1903 as the Santa Fe Central Railroad, and by 1908, it was owned by the New Mexico Central Railway. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad acquired the line in 1926, and then abandoned it in pieces over the next 20 years.

Corona to Willard: This line served as a connection at Torrance, NM from the old New Mexico Central line to the Rock Island line (still intact) off US54 and the Torrance County Road C016/CO13 (about 10 miles north of Corona, NM). This abandoned grade goes west from Torrance (easily visible from the road and in aerial photos) and eventually makes a turn to the northwest and intersect State Road #42 about 10 miles SE of Cedarvale, NM. From there the grade went into Willard, NM (about 30 miles to the northwest). State Road #42 follows the old rail alignment from Cedarvale but there is not much remaining evidence.
