Constructed in 1879 with services starting in May of that year, the Saginaw Bay & Northwestern Railroad primarily served the lucrative lumber trade in the region west of Pinconning, Michigan.

The railroad came under the control of the Michigan Central Railroad in 1883, and was eventually abandoned under ownership of the New York Central due to the declining lumber industry during the Great Depression.
