The Great Southern Railroad

The Dalles to Friend, OR

The Great Southern Railroad was first built in 1905, and connected The Dalles (on the Oregon-Washington Railroad, Union Pacific today) to Dufur, along 15-mile creek. The line was extended Friend, on Pine Creek, in 1913.

The railroad struggled financially for most of its existence, with final abandonment coming in 1936.
