The Cuyuna Northern Railroad was incorporated in 1911 in order to connect a number of iron ore mines in the area around Deerwood to the Northern Pacific mainline there. The CNRR consisted of two branches: one that went to the Mille Lac mine and the other to a mine at Oreland.
The Northern Pacific Railroad purchased the CNRR outright in 1914, giving NP access to the various mines served by the CNRR.
