This rail also extended to a coal mine at Palmer.
The locals called the line the "(Mountain) Goat line" and in its day a student could travel from Cowan to the University of the South in Sewanee. I thought the line went on at least as far as Coalmont, TN. There appears to be what could have been a switching tower in Coalmont.
Today, there are attempts to make the line a bike and walking trail to (at least) Sewanee.
I rode this in a Toyota 4 wheel drive truck. What a sight and excitement.
5 mile run this weekend on the improved trail along the old R/W from Sewanee to Monteagle. The former line extend east to Palmer through Tracey City , Coalmont, Gruetli, Laager and Collins to Palmer. Will be a big boon to Grundy County if it can be completed.
