The South Manchester Railroad

Map submitted by Greg Book.

GOOGLE MAPS no longer available: With apologies, I am unable to continue showing Google Maps. Google has forced my hand by increasing their map usage fee from nothing/free to OVER $300 A MONTH for the Abandoned Rails website! This is an expense that I simply cannot afford. Rest assured I am looking at available open source alternatives, so maps should be back online soon!

The South Manchester Railroad was built in 1869, and at 2.25 miles was the shortest freight and passenger railroad in the US. It was built by the Cheney brothers who had a silk mill in South Manchester and sought a connection to the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad mainline in the other end of Manchester. Passenger service ceased in 1933 and freight ended in the 1980s with abandonment following.

Thanks to Greg Book for contributing information about this route.

There's a book about the railroad. I believe that it is out of print, but it was called 'Silk Along Steel'. Great book..
