The Saint Mary's Branch

The line east of Bellefontaine was abandoned in 1937. West of Bellefontaine was in use until the 1970's. I am not sure exactly when it was abandoned. Jerry Taylor's "Sampling of Penn Central" has a photo of the weeds overtaking this line in the early 70's. He stated that the line was 10mph "brushcutter" service.
A small section of this line is still used in Wapak and goes underneath I-75.
Right on the remaining bit of track in Wapak, there is a NYC coach and an amtrak coach.
I worked as a brakeman on the New York Central St. Mary's Local in the 1960s. This train ran the 39 miles from the Big 4 yard in Bellefontaine up through Russell's Point, Santa Fe, Wapakoneta, Moulton and into downtown St. Mary's, and back again, handlng maybe 25 cars per day in both directions combined. I wrote a short piece about what the working day was like, which appears on the Steam Railroads part of the ColumbusRailroads.com website.
At where South Blackhoof Street would cross the NYC in Wapakoneta, a interurban used to go down that street, called the Western Ohio Railway. And interurban car was hit by a freight train there.
