This complex of branches and spurs formed the Johannesburg Branch of the Michigan Central Railroad. It was built to serve the lucrative forest and timber interests in the immediate vicinity around Johannesburg; indeed, the Johannesburg Manufacturing Company was one (if not the only) customer along the line.
Owing to lumber production ultimately depleting natural resources, and Johannesburg Manufacturing shutting down its sawmill consequently, abandonment of the branch was sought and approved in 1930.
