This line was built in 1905 by the Great Western Railway of Colorado as a feeder route for local sugar beet farmers to nearby national rail lines. The line supported both freight and passenger operations (the latter up until 1972). As time passed, trucking progressively became the favored transport in the area, eventually rendering the line moot in 1977 while under ownership of Omnitrax.
The right-of-way was rail-banked in 2004 and currently serves as the Great Western rail trail.
