This route was built by the Casselton Branch Railroad (a subsidiary of the Northern Pacific Railway) in 1880 as part of longer route between Breckenridge and Mayville. Later that same year, the route was purchased by the Great Northern Railway, which soon merged into the Burlington Northern Railroad.

The route was abandoned in 1977.
