This line was built by the Wabash Railroad in 1901. It connected to the company's early 1880s-built Chicago-Montpelier line, providing service to Toledo, Ohio. It also provided connections to the company's Detroit-Saint Louis line.
In 1964, the Wabash Railroad merged with the Norfolk and Western Railroad, itself merging with the Southern Railroad in 1982 to become Norfolk Southern.
The line from Maumee to Montpelier was abandoned by Norfolk Southern in 1990. Today, it makes up "the north fork" of the Wabash Cannonball Rail Trail. At 46 miles in length, it is the longest Rail Trail in the State of Ohio.
