This route was originally built by the Great Northern Railway in 1892 as part of its transcontinental route across the far northern part of the United States. It traversed Haskell Pass in the Salish Mountains at an altitude of 4,300 feet.
The portion between Kalispell and Sterling was abandoned in 1904 in favor of a different route that provided gentler grades, and today serves as the Great Northern Historic Trail.
