Louisiana Plantations

The Laurel Valley Plantation, in Lafourche Parish LA, employed these two critters. The one on the right, #1906 "Marie Louise" is a Davenport switcher; the left one is #1785 "Ruby-Sue", a Plymouth.

Plantations in Louisiana were once as common as feathers on a duck. Small railroading operations were established to move harvested cotton to nearby larger railroads for shipping.

This odd looking car is actually a locomotive: a "boxcab shunter" locomotive to be exact. It was built by Baldwin/Westinghouse in 1907, and was originally used by the New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board. Today, it is on display at Mel Ott Park in Gretna, LA.
