West Yellowstone, MT

A marker showing Union Pacific's past presence in West Yellowstone, Montana, via its Oregon Short Line subsidiary which originally built the line through town.

The Oregon Short Line railroad originally built a branch line from its mainline in Ashton, Idaho to the western boundary of Yellowstone National Park in 1907. At the time, OSL was a subsidiary of Union Pacific Railroad. Over time, the town of West Yellowstone became the gateway to Yellowstone NP from the west, and evidence of its railroad heritage shows around town. Further information can be found at the National Park website.

Another view of the passenger car and the back of the train station. The car stands on the old railbed.

A heavyweight passenger car converted to RPO. I could not determine its use at the time of the picture. There is a single window in the middle of the car on the other side.

The passenger station at West Yellowstone. It is now a visitor's center.

The front of the visitor center/museum.
