The Winfield Railroad was established on September 25, 1900 in order to build a short railroad line between West Winfield and Denny's Mill. It accessed a nearby Pennsylvania Railroad line, also abandoned, at Winfield Junction.

It is not known when this line was abandoned; it appears on a railroad map from 1948, but shows as abandoned on a similar map from 1985.

i noticed abandoned possible abandoned rail and bridges.are they still there?please let me know.thank you.

There is at least one still there on the southernmost end of the line where it meets up with the butler freeport trail. I have gone fishing here before, and some friends of mine used to swim there when we were kids. I had no idea that the north end of this was very close to an area that I have been to dozens of times until i stumbled across this site.

On Google maps you can also see the beams of another bridge at the north end, just before it goes up behind the cement plant.

The Winfield RR (Class 3) was owned and operated by the Penn-Dixie Cement Company to service West Winfield is now designated as Cabot by the U S Postal Service. As this mill was not on water, railroad service was essential and provides easy access to the PRR for many decades.

As a matter of information, the Winfield Railroad had operating rights over the PRR from Freeport, PA to Winfield Junction, then had MOW responsibility to West Winfield.

Principal revenue traffic was Gypsum, Cement, Horse Manure

(growing medium for mushrooms).

Horse manure for growing mushrooms...that makes sense considering the mushroom mines were just up the road. As for any rail remaining, I'm thinking it has all been removed.

I know a stretch of this old line along Buffalo, My best friend lives along buffalo creek just up stream from Kepple Station. There is a bridge still in tack about a half mile up creek. Also where Kepple Station is, the structures for the old steam sled up to slate lick are mostly still there along with some large pulleys on top of the hill.

I live along Buffalo Creek near Boggsville and yes there are a few bridges left hear and there. I'm trying to learn more about the history of the area. Never seen any track left, but the old route can still be walked in some places.

Thanks patty and Darren for your information. The main reason I asked about what is left of the rail line is because I am curious to see what is there being I grew up along a rail line which is currently abandoned.Being north of Pittsburgh is no big deal because even though I live in southeastern pa.i do not mind travelling. Thanks again for both of you and your information.

I know there is a railroad bridge just south of Boggsville as the line crosses Cornplanter Run, but I have never gone across the creek to see it close up. There is also a old rusty hopper or something near the north end of the line, near armstrong cement. Let me know if your ever going to be around.
