The Shaniko Branch was not abandoned all at once, but in stages. First back to Grass Valley, then Moro, and thence to the UP main. I grew up in The Dalles, and we often took rides into Sherman County (in which this branch largely lies.) I did not see active rails in the south end, but in the late 1950s did see trains on the northerly rails mainly when there was grain to be hauled. By the late 1960s, it was all gone, partly because of construction of The Dalles Dam which required relocation of the UP main to higher ground.
