This line began in 1846 as the Sandusky, Mansfield and Newark Railroad, running from Sandusky to Newark, Ohio. In 1869, it came under control of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, for which it became part of the mainline. In the early 1890s, the B&O began using a new mainline west from Willard, and downgraded this line from its mainline status. It was operated into the late 1970s/early 1980s.

Today, portions of this line remains in operation from Newark to Mount Vernon and from Willard to Mansfield. Elsewhere, the route is abandoned. An 18-mile long rail-trail, the Richland B&O trail, has been constructed on the right-of-way from Butler to Mansfield. Other than that, the line remains undeveloped. An isolated section of abandoned track is still in place as pictured here, just north of Prout. In addition, according to satellite imagery, there appears to be remains of a yard with tracks still in place just to the north of these photos; however, it is now on NASA Plumbrook (government) property.

what are the rules with the tracks. (b&o) are you aloud to take out the old track bed? i seen csx. name on them at the court house

I used to live in Butler, and I remember the sad, sad day in 1987 when CSX began to tear up the tracks through Bellville and Butler. There is a nice truss bridge (intact) at Bellville, and girder bridges over the Clear Fork just north of Butler and northwest of Bellville. The line runs southwest of Butler, and west to Ankneytown before it turns south towards Fredericktown. There is a deep cut west of Ankneytown.

I'll never understand why CSX abandoned this line. It was active well into the mid-1980s The trains often pulled onto a siding in Butler so that the crew could eat at our one (and only) diner

This line was a segment of the original B&O mainline to Chicago. It became secondary when the B&O acquired the direct line from New Castle to Willard (current CSX main.) As with the CA&C, as online business vanished, the rails were removed.

There is a stone arch bridge between Mason Rd & Bogert Rd in Erie County. Some of the old road bed is visible by Perkins High School. It runs and the back of my yard.

The part that ran through the village of Monroeville was put back in some years ago, it allows the grain mill there access to the Wheeling and Lake Erie. It only stretches about a mile or so, and stops before crossing US 20. From what I understand it was a life saver for the mill to have the put back in.
