Southern Pacific's Duarte Branch ran 14 miles, from Shorb, MP 487.7 on the SP Sunset Route in Alhambra to MP 501.7 near Rivas, at the west bank of the San Gabriel River near Duarte. The line was built from Los Angeles to Monrovia as the narrow-gauge San Gabriel Valley Rapid Transit Railway in 1887, and was standard-gauged in 1892 and then purchased by SP in 1893. SP abandoned most of the line in 1941, and the section from Arcadia to Duarte became Pacific Electric Railway's "Day & Night Spur." More details on my long-under-construction website at
This abandonment sounds like the outer end of the Duarte Branch. The SP Duarte station (closest present day landmark is LA County Fire Station 44) survived into the 1940s, although the track was long gone, and active rails ended at the Day & Night water heater plant between Shamrock and Mountain in Monrovia. Around 1941 SP abandoned the track between Shorb (west side of Alhambra) and Arcadia, dealing off the remainder to Pacific Electric, which tied it into their Monrovia-Glendora Line north of Huntington Dr. PE did not electrify the line, but first operated it with a gas-electric unit stationed at Arcadia, and later used GE center -cab, and Baldwin and EMD diesel switchers.
