The bridge over the Platte River has been been converted to a pedestrian bridge. Photo by James Holtgrewe.

This railway was originally built by the Republican Valley Railroad; construction started in 1879 and was completed between Aurora and Central City in 1880. In 1886, the RVRR was renamed the Republican Valley, Kansas and Southwestern Railroad. The line continued under the mergers into the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, the Burlington Northern Railroad, and BNSF, who abandoned it post-2005.

BNSF abandoned the 8 miles of track between Central City and one mile south of Marquette a couple of years ago because they did not want to maintain the Platte river bridge. Merrick county bought the right of way and turned the track into a walking path.
