I remember when this line was abandoned. It was supposedly home to one of the ATSF Baldwin centercabs-there wasn't a turntable in Pekin.
I have some photos somewhere of passenger Fs going to Pekin for that permanent visit to locomotive heaven.
Does anyone know exactly what part of Pekin this was? I live 30 miles away & would be intrested in seeing if a right of way still exists?
When I made my student trip on the Morton-Pekin local in Dec 1973 the turntable was still in place at the east yard in Pekin. The derail protecting it was buried in the snow and we ran over it. The engine didn't derail, but the derail was stuck between the wheels.
Final abandonment took place on July 7th, 1983.
Thanks for the correction on the turntable-I never saw one in Pekin.
this is a question was there a y track on the line?
My Mother-in-Law and Father-in-Law (both deceased) lived at 1002 Market St. in Prkin, IL. Their house was at the corner of Market St. and 10th. The tracks went right behind their house. The tracks are gone and there is a walk/bike path there now. I was lucky enough to make two tape recordings of trains passing behind their house in August of 1978.
the switch into town as of 3/1/15 is abandoned
The two recordings I mentioned in my previous post are available free of charge. I can send them on a CD or over the Internet as .wav files.
