Orleans to West Baden Springs
— User Comments —
I can remember a huge trestle bridge crossing some river/creek on this line ,I'm thinking it was just south of Paoli and seeing a train cross it . It was back when I was about 9-10 years old and I was truly fascinated!!!! I was about riding with my dad and step grandfather who died in 1971 ,so it was most certainly over 40 years ago.
Does anybody know if this railroad connected directly with the current railroad running from French Lick to Jasper?
I'm sorry the great trestle was North of Paoli, when I mentioned South it must have been that it was south of Orlean. It was a great sight to behold.
Brian: I believe that you are referring to the Tulip Trestle along the Monon right of way. Google has some videos of action on the trestle.
No there was a trestle across the Lost River Basin between Orleans and Paoli on this branch of the Monon.
Brian, you are absolutley 100% correct there was a Trestle north of Paoli, and you can still see the stone abutments from HYW 37. The Monon Railroad Technical Society has pictures of this great span. http://www.monon.monon.org/frenchlick/10-12original-paolitrestle.jpg
Southern built track from Huntingburg that passed through Jasper, Dubois,Cuzco, through the Burtan Tunnel, to French Lick.

To answer Brian's question
I believe the map on this to be inaccurate.I've seen pictures of the monon line crossing 56 after the bridge where Abbeydell road connects to 56 in west baden. As you head south look towards the right before the west baden hotel and you can see an old rail bed.I've seen pictures of steam engines on a rail behind the arched entryway to West Baden Springs hotel. This line connected to the now repurposed trolley line on which there is a wye. To the right ,I believe, was the spur for passenger traffic to the french lick hotel that a former owner of the hotel had monon build.I don't know that to be fact. This spur ends at Monon drive and the rest of the area was altered for a golf course/casino.Its basically used for a scrapyard now where old museum cars go to be cut up for scrap. To the left takes you to a railway museum which is an old monon depot. This track continues on to Cuzco(excursion trip from museum)where it reverses back.I believe from Cuzco on was a different rail system(always referred to as southern???).
