Newton to Whitewater

  • Quick Info:
  • States: Kansas
  • Railroads: MP, UP

GOOGLE MAPS no longer available: With apologies, I am unable to continue showing Google Maps. Google has forced my hand by increasing their map usage fee from nothing/free to OVER $300 A MONTH for the Abandoned Rails website! This is an expense that I simply cannot afford. Rest assured I am looking at available open source alternatives, so maps should be back online soon!

Note: Recent abandonment information was provided by an article written by Marathana Furches and Chris Strunk in the online version of the Newton Kansan.

At Whitewater, the abandoned line crossed the existing UP line prior to its abandonment. Here, the active UP line is seen at the approximate location of the abandoned line's crossing. Photo by Joseph Loop, July 2010.

This line, in central Kansas, was originally part of a Missouri Pacific line which extended from McPherson to El Dorado.

The Newton to El Dorado via Whitewater segment became part of the Union Pacific in 1982. Some time after that, the segment south of Whitewater was abandoned. The Newton to Whitewater segment, also serving McLains and Annelly, remained in operation until the summer of 2003, but it was abandoned by the end of the year.

Thanks for the nice photos Joseph. Also, I like the new feature that I have noticed appear recently on the site in which many article photos have an icon near the upper-right that when clicked, shows the location of the photo on the map (specifically which blue marker belongs to that photo). Great feature!
