Newark to Shawnee

The Rock Run Branch

Point of Interest

GOOGLE MAPS no longer available: With apologies, I am unable to continue showing Google Maps. Google has forced my hand by increasing their map usage fee from nothing/free to OVER $300 A MONTH for the Abandoned Rails website! This is an expense that I simply cannot afford. Rest assured I am looking at available open source alternatives, so maps should be back online soon!

(Forwarded from the Newark, Somerset & Straitsville Railroad)

The right-of-way of this Baltimore & Ohio branch line was first conceived by the Scioto and Hocking Valley Railroad in 1849. However, the line was not completed until the ROW was purchased by the Newark, Somerset and Straitsville Railroad, which completed and opened the line in 1867.

The line itself ran from Rock Run Junction in Newark, OH to Salt Lick Mine in Shawnee, to the south. It was then sold to the Ohio Midland Railroad in 1900, followed by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, who abandoned portions of the line beginning in 1927.

I am proud to say I worked on the last remaining stretch of this line from the Heath/Newark area to National Road Station on US 40 on the now defunct Buckeye Central Scenic Railroad. I worked on it from 2002 until we left in summer of 2004. It was a very fun time. From what I understand, that segment is also gone.
