The abandoned line running west from Wells was probably SP's orginal mainline to Reno. It was just straightened out at some point.
It was the railroad Connection to Metropolis, today a ghost-town. The line was discontinued in 1922. Read the very interresting Story of Metropolis in Wikipedia!
There was a wye at the end of the branch. In between BLM road and Burnt Creek.
My 2012 post about UP's original line might actually be the WP.
