The abandoned railroad route between Kramer and Johannesburg of which 27.79 miles have been abandoned, was once operated in California by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway and the California, Arizona & Santa Fe Railway.

Phil Serpico's book "A Road to Riches" (Omni Publications)has some info and pictures about this line. There were gold mines in the area; the towns were named after those in the mining regions of South Africa.
