Paw Paw to Sheridan

The Joliet, Rockford and Northern Railroad

Map submitted by Lee M.

GOOGLE MAPS no longer available: With apologies, I am unable to continue showing Google Maps. Google has forced my hand by increasing their map usage fee from nothing/free to OVER $300 A MONTH for the Abandoned Rails website! This is an expense that I simply cannot afford. Rest assured I am looking at available open source alternatives, so maps should be back online soon!

This line was built in 1881 between Paw Paw and Sheridan, Illinois. It was purchased by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in 1884.

Thanks to Lee M. for contributing information about this route.

Ha! Thank you for your excellent maps. This explains the odd bend in 43Rd at rte 23, thanks!

The junction located 2.2 miles west of Sheridan was known as Burgess Junction, according to an old railroad map I have. The name was still in use in the mid-1960" CB&Q employee timetables, long after abandonment of the JR&N. By the mid 1970's when I worked for them, this same location was called Catharine in the timetables (milepost 66.55)

They are recent plans to build a bypass railway to avoid rail congestion in Chicago. This is a portion of the proposed bypass route in a planning phase. Signs are up in area around Baker protesting this plan.
