Jacksboro to Salesville

Point of Interest

GOOGLE MAPS no longer available: With apologies, I am unable to continue showing Google Maps. Google has forced my hand by increasing their map usage fee from nothing/free to OVER $300 A MONTH for the Abandoned Rails website! This is an expense that I simply cannot afford. Rest assured I am looking at available open source alternatives, so maps should be back online soon!

This branch line of the Gulf, Texas & Western was first built south out of Jacksboro to Salesville in 1913. There, it connected with the Weatherford, Mineral Wells & Northwestern Railway, along which the GT&W continued to Mineral Wells (both passenger and freight service) and beyond to Weatherford (freight service only) via trackage rights.

The railroad was purchased by the Saint Louis-San Fransisco Railroad in 1930; local competition from trucks and other highway traffic ultimately forced abandonment of the line in 1939.

I've heard people who are native to the Jacksboro area refer to this line as the "Grand Trunk", presumably because The Gulf, Texas, And Western's reporting marks are similar to Grand Trunk Western's (GT&W/GTW). I'm assuming this line interchanged with Texas Export (Ex-Rock Island) at Jacksboro??

Do you know anything about abandoned Rock Island Branch Line from Bridgeport, TX to Jacksboro, TX. It ran south and east out of town towards Bridgeport. I took pictures tonight of the station and part of the grade.

The Jacksboro-Bridgeport line was indeed the Texas Export Railroad, acquired from the Rock Island in 1972. It ran 54 miles, from Bridgeport, TX. to Graham, TX. Their power was one Baldwin VO1000 switcher. The line never really was in very good shape to begin with, and was abandoned in 1976. Most of the track was ripped up by 1979.
