While the McCloud River Railroad is still in operation, the segment between Hambone and Lookout Junction, owned by Burlington Northern Santa Fe but operated by McCloud River, last saw a train in December 2003 and has since been abandoned. All the track between Mc Cloud east has been torn up unfortunately. We were out there in late '08 and took a last ride on the weekend, we were on track that had been unbolted, but not yet torn up. There was machinery at either end, and I assume it was all gone a week after we were there.

Oh, well.

Everything east of McCloud is being turned into a rails-to-trails. All the track and ties have been pulled and some grading has been done to turn it over to a trail. You can drive most of it although some stretches are blocked by boulders.

Me and my family went on the dinner train on the mccloud railway on the last year it operated and just a couple of weeks ago I saw a mccloud railway boxcar on a bnsf train heading thru Fullerton.
