Grenada Junction to Grenada

Picture Point of Interest

Showing of

An abandoned trestle over a Mississippi "brake". This late 1940s abandonment on the former IC from Grenada Junction (just north of Greenwood) to Grenada is still in good shape. Photo by Tom Lucas.

This line was originally part of the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad (YMV). The YMV was owned by the Illinois Central and was incorporated in 1882 to build a line westward from Jackson, MS. The line was probably built in the 1890s, and went through the following towns: Whaley, Avalon, Leflore, Parsons, Holcomb, Dubard and into Grenada. Illinois Central merged the YMV in 1945 and 1946, and then in 1947 abandoned this line. The rails were removed in 1949.

Thanks to Tom Lucas for contributing information about this route.

There are some awesome photos of trains, pile drivers, stations, locomotives of the Yazoo and Missippi Valley railroad at "http://steve.bill--porter.com/glory_days.htm". Your website gave me a lot of information I was looking for. Thanks.
