Freeport to Butler, PA
— User Comments —
This line was abandoned in the late eighties; it is now the Freeport rails-to-trails walking trail.
does that include the abandoned bridge over the river?
George, there is no abandoned bridge in this area, at least not on this line. The Freeport-Butler line connected to the PRR Conemaugh division on the NW side of the Alleghany. It also ran on the SW side of Buffalo Creek and did not cross it. The PRR bridge over the Alleghany just N of Freeport is still in use. There is a PRR (AVRR) bridge across the mouth of the Kiskiminetas that was declared unsafe and is out of service. This is on the SE side of the Alleghany running from Schenley PA. The tourist RR at Schenley has also been shut down. The Shawmut tracks (now B&P) also appear to be rusting up in this area - since the environmentalists shut down the power plant at Reesedale. This is a pretty area but aside from the Conemaugh main none of the other lines are used any longer.
Mike, thanks for the information.I might have been mistaken about bridges because i can't get satellite like i used to on the old setup so i can't do satellite view on the whole rail line.
