Fairview to Watford City

Point of Interest

GOOGLE MAPS no longer available: With apologies, I am unable to continue showing Google Maps. Google has forced my hand by increasing their map usage fee from nothing/free to OVER $300 A MONTH for the Abandoned Rails website! This is an expense that I simply cannot afford. Rest assured I am looking at available open source alternatives, so maps should be back online soon!

A rough timeline of this branch line to Watford City, ND:

      Fairview                    Arnegard                    Watford City
1913      |-- Montana Eastern Railway --|
1914                                    |-- Montana Eastern Railway --|
1928      |--------------- Great Northern Railway --------------------|
1970      |------------- Burlington Northern Railway -----------------|
1992      |..................... abandoned ...........................|

I am currently living in Williston, ND and have explored the beginning of this route. They have a very awesome vertical lift bridge that dumps right into a quarter mile long tunnel. The lift bridge sadly only ran once, and that was to test it. Steam boat traffic up the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers sharply declined right before this bridge was completed. This bridge and the Cartwright tunnel just to the east have been converted to walking trails. You can walk over the bridge and through the tunnel (legally) :). It is called the Fairview lift bridge and is sometimes referred to as the Sundheim lift bridge. She has a sister bridge not far away. It is called the Snowden lift bridge and is still in use today, although it doesn't lift anymore. BNSF is pushing its freight over her.
