Cokeburg Junction to Marianna

The Ellsworth Branch

Point of Interest

GOOGLE MAPS no longer available: With apologies, I am unable to continue showing Google Maps. Google has forced my hand by increasing their map usage fee from nothing/free to OVER $300 A MONTH for the Abandoned Rails website! This is an expense that I simply cannot afford. Rest assured I am looking at available open source alternatives, so maps should be back online soon!

This abandoned segment of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Ellsworth Branch starts at Cokeburg Junction (at an active switch to a lead that goes to a factory in Cokeburg, PA), and runs in a generally southwest direction to its end at Marianna, PA. It served a number of coke mines in the area. The Ellsworth Branch also included the Ontario Branch, a short spur that accessed the small hamlet of Ontario, PA.

The rest of the Ellsworth Branch, from Monongahela to Cokeburg Junction, is still in use today by Norfolk Southern.

At your point of interest, 1339, that line heads off and met up with the Pittsburgh Industrial railroad at Charters Creek. There are still bridge abutments and other infrastructure in place. You can actually follow the right of way on the map. Not sure what railroad it was.

Portland, OR

Thanks George for the information.Worth checking out.

The Ellsworth branch to the north, is now out of service. The branch between Monongahela and Bentlyville hasn't seen a train since 2010 when 84 mine closed.
