The Chicago, Attica and Southern Railroad

Map submitted by Mike Fromholt.

GOOGLE MAPS no longer available: With apologies, I am unable to continue showing Google Maps. Google has forced my hand by increasing their map usage fee from nothing/free to OVER $300 A MONTH for the Abandoned Rails website! This is an expense that I simply cannot afford. Rest assured I am looking at available open source alternatives, so maps should be back online soon!

(Forwarded from the Chicago & Great Southern Railway)

This line was once part of the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad, spun off to the CA&S in the 1920's or 30's. Line was in much financial trouble and was finally abandoned small sections at a time until the final section about 1948. One small section remains running South from the Norfolk Southern tracks in Attica to service a business. Jim Thomas, of the "Train Exchange" hobby shop in Kokomo, In, is close or finished with a book about the CA&S that should tell all the history of this long gone line and I look forward to getting a copy when available.

A part of this line was purchased by Baltimore and Ohio and was used for quarries, etc. One locomotive was a steam locomotive form Montezuma Sand and Gravel, a saddle tanker, on display ath the Montgicello Railway Museum. It was used from 1972 to 1987, but now is a static display piece.

I'll be finishing a book on the CA&S this summer.

This map is in error in three respects. 1) The CA&S never owned the line that ran from the state line to Momence Junction in Illinois. 2) The CA&S never owned nor operated the line that ran from Brazil to the junction with the B&O main line to Springfield(I can't remember the name of that junction right now). 3) The line from Percy Junction to La Crosse is not shown.
