Carlisle to Carlisle Junction

Map submitted by Wesley Burkholder.

GOOGLE MAPS no longer available: With apologies, I am unable to continue showing Google Maps. Google has forced my hand by increasing their map usage fee from nothing/free to OVER $300 A MONTH for the Abandoned Rails website! This is an expense that I simply cannot afford. Rest assured I am looking at available open source alternatives, so maps should be back online soon!

This shows a remnant of a grade crossing on Zion Road, just north of Carlisle Junction. Photo by Mike Palmer, August 2004.

This abandoned segment is part of a branch of the Reading Railroad that at one time extended from Carlisle to Gettysburg, PA, crossing the Reading mainline at Carlisle Junction. The segment north of Carlisle Junction was likely abandoned when Conrail was formed in 1976. The segment south of Carlisle Junction to Gettysburg became the Gettysburg Railroad.

Thanks to Mike Palmer for contributing information about this route.

Heavilly damaged in the June 1972 flood and not restored.
