In speaking with an old farmer who lived adjacent to the line...he stated that a large flood wiped out the high bridge over Connoquenessing Creek, and the line was then rerouted along the creek bottom to a new connection at Renfrew, circa 1936.
has anyone been in the tunnel?i would like to know if it is accessable and if there is any rail or other equipment around or near it.i am a rail buff.
I have personally been in this tunnel and know quite a bit about this line. The tunnel is not easy to get into since the north end is completely collapsed and the south portal is filled with trash. Easiest way is to park on Tunnel road at the second big bend at the top of the hill near the wire cable blocking access to the field above the tunnel and to walk along the edge of the collapsed section. There is a way to get down into the backfilled section then climb down into the tunnel. Most of the tunnel has suffered major water damage and the wooden supports on the north end are collapsed. It is very uneven in the tunnel and good shoes are required as well as flashlights since you cannot see daylight due to ends being collapsed and filled in. Please note it is on posted property and is patrolled by local authorities.
thanks for the information about the tunnel.since it is posted i would not trespass on private property.also you said the tunnel is basically shot.i would just like to check it out and see how it was possibly built.i definitely would never put no one in danger.thanks again for the info.
I understand there use to be a RR that ran through what is now Cranberry Twp, through a little area called Glen Eden. There was suppose to be an orphanage near the track. The train did not stop except twice a year to bring in supplies to the orphanage. Supposedly no roads in or out of the orphanage. Anyone have any info on this?

This is in reference to the comment on the rail line that ran into Cranberry Twp. There was a Callery branch of the B.O. railroad that branched off the current line near where the Callery and Ribold met in Callery If you use google earth you can still see the right of way running where Main St. Ext. heads west out of Callery. It is not as prominent on aerial shot near the junction but if you follow the road you will start to see the right of way appear. I believe the orphanage was converted into a home and was later bought by the Ronald McDonald Charity. It is situated on Peters Rd. near the intersection of Rowan Rd. A portion of Rowan road north of this intersection is the old rail line right of way.
