The Blue Diamond Branch

Picture Point of Interest

GOOGLE MAPS no longer available: With apologies, I am unable to continue showing Google Maps. Google has forced my hand by increasing their map usage fee from nothing/free to OVER $300 A MONTH for the Abandoned Rails website! This is an expense that I simply cannot afford. Rest assured I am looking at available open source alternatives, so maps should be back online soon!

The mound of dirt and rocks marks the end of the active portion of UP's Blue Diamond Branch. This picture was taken near the intersection of Meranto Avenue and Tenaya Way. Photo by Mike Palmer, March 2011.

This branch extended west from Union Pacific's mainline at Arden (south of Las Vegas) and extended to a gypsum plant near Blue Diamond. At some point, most likely in the 1980s, this line was abandoned, and the gypsum plant started using trucks for their shipments.

The far eastern segment is still in place, and appears to be used for car storage. The center segment has been partially obliterated by new housing developments. The far western segment, near the gypsum plant, traveled on remote private property.

Thanks to Mike Palmer for contributing information about this route.

I love this Union Pacific rail yard. There used to be a railroad crossing that is sandwiched between the rail yard and the entrance where the trains come into the rail yard that they converted into a bridge.

This is a very nice rail yard. There are other rail yards in Vegas including the Blue Diamond rail yard, the Henderson rail yard which actually goes up to Boulder city, the crew exchange yard and the one by Motor Speedway which I really want to visit.

These are great shots however I have photos I took all over the Vegas valley in the late 70s early 80s I'd like to share. Please let me know how.
