Historic ICC Abandonment Filings

PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD
Docket Number: 19388 Date: 6/6/1956 Section: 1(18)
Joint app. of The Belvidere Delaware Railroad Company and The Pennsylvania Railroad Company for permission to abandon a line of railroad extending northeasterly 2.59 miles from MP 3383/26 at Belvidere to MP 3520/18 at Manunka Chunk, all within Warren County, New Jersey.
Length: 2.59 miles Citation:

Your points of interest are slightly off. The PRR and the L & HR split at Belvidere, just north of "G" Tower. There WAS a wye in Belvidere for L &HR trains to go north on the "Bel-Del". The PRR and the DL&W "Old Road" joined at Manunka Chunka. There was also a tunnel in Manunka Chunk.

Far more significant, and not included on this list, is the former DL&W "old main" between Washington, NJ, and Portland, PA.

The brown spur you see y-ing off to the left was the location where explosives were loaded and unloaded for the Hercules Power Company. Their main building was located were RADA is now (Northern Belvidere) and there were many bunkers throughout the woods behind the building.

According to the reason of abandonment, it was brought on by the great Hurricane Diane of 1955 that completely destroyed DL&W's "Old Road" and the Bel-Del's access to Pennsylvania. Trackage was left in the double tubed Manuka Chunk tunnels because sections of the ceilings collapsed on them during the flooding. The DL&W "Old Road" was dismantled from Washington, N.J. all the way to Delaware, N.J. where the double track trestle still stands that led access for PRR and DL&W trains. The bridge hasn't been used since the flooding in 1955. From my understanding, that sounds right when the connection of the PRR to the DL&W was ripped up. From Belvidere and from Washington to Delaware, N.J.

Also, L&HR's northbound junction was ripped up in the late '50's because it no longer served a purpose.

My dad and I used to walk this ROW when I was young. The ties on the washed-out section of the PRR line near Manunka Chunk were still in lines in the washout. The station agent's house still stands on Route 46. It was a daycare, recently.
