Abandoned Rails of Alameda County

An abandoned railroad line in Alameda County, California of which 20 miles have been abandoned, was once operated in California by the Central Pacific Railroad and the Southern Pacific Railroad.

SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD
Docket Number: 12791 Date: 2/26/1940 Section: 1
Application of Central Pacific Railway Company and Southern Pacific Railroad Company for abandonment of certain lines of railroad in Alameda County, Calif, approximately 20 miles.
Length: 20 miles Citation: 242 ICC 283

This petition probably has to do with the abandonment of the Interurban Electric Railway (former SP) East Bay commuter lines. There is probably a concomitant application from the Key System to assume operations over some of the IER lines subject to these abandonment proceedings. The IER abandonment took place, I believe, in January 1941, as did the KSTL operation over former IER lines, so the time line seems appropriate.
